Notre Dame’s First Planned Gift

Image of Father BadinIn 1832, Father Stephen Theodore Badin, the first priest to be ordained in America, signed the deed for the property in northern Indiana that was to become, 10 years later, the University of Notre Dame.

The Badin Guild was established to commemorate Fr. Badin as Notre Dame’s first planned gift benefactor and to honor all those who, like this generous priest, made Notre Dame a part of their legacy through a planned gift.

Over the years, the University has been blessed with many benefactors who, like Fr. Badin before them, provided an estate gift that would advance the University to new heights of achievement.

“The spirit of Notre Dame begins and ends with love and devotion to the Blessed Mother. The Grotto is by far the most sacred, important, and popular place on the campus. Our Lady’s inspiration, help, and guidance drives our ability to take on life’s tasks with confidence and to succeed. She is the shining light in the world … she is always Notre Dame, forever.”
